October 1: Free Art Day! |
October 8: Shapes in Spaces It’s all about seeing shapes differently and creating new spaces! We will be exploring the elements of space and shape this week, undistracted by color! The young artists will be looking at the art of Escher, including his fascinating tessellations. We will then create our own abstract design and/or tessellation in black and white. |
October 15: Skinny Sculptures This 3D class offers a fun experience in the exploration of line in space. In this very popular class the students will learn about Alberto Giacometti, a famous Swiss artist who is best known for his thin, bronze sculptures. The artists will create exciting, dynamic sculptures of themselves in action! |
October 22: Wild Beast Collage Henri Matisse was a leader in the Fauves, or wild beast, art movement. The artists were infamous for their use of bright, bold, wild colors! While Matisse spent most of his life painting, as he got older it became hard for him to stand at an easel; so he switched to collage, something he could do sitting down. This week the artist will create their own bright, bold, wild beast collages in the style of Matisse, as Henri said, “... it is like drawing with scissors and sculpting with color.” |
October 29: Fantasy Masks Masks can be found in cultures around the world and throughout time, theirs is a long and rich history. In this class, each artist will create their own mask in the grand tradition of the Venetian Carnivale! Feathers, and sequins, and glitter! Oh my! |
November 5: Patterns in Pictures The artists will study the decorative Australian wildlife paintings of Susan Wanji Wanji and other aboriginal artists. The young artists will draw their own Australian animals, then decorate them with a fanciful array of colors and patterns. We will learn about The Dreamtime and read a folktale from Australia. |
November 12: 20th Century Art This week’s artist will be Piet Mondrian. He is well-known for his studies of line and color, but his was an interesting artistic journey. We will be looking at Mondrian’s work throughout his life, with an emphasis on his abstracts, like Broadway Boogie Woogie. The young artists will be using acrylics on canvas boards to create their own Mondrian-inspired abstracts. |
November 19: Before a Mirror This week our focus is the element of color, and how artists use color to tell their story. Using a painting by Picasso, we will be studying how feelings can be so clearly reflected in art. The artists will create their own piece using color to express emotions based on Picasso's "Girl Before a Mirror." |
November 26: Snowflake Art Do you know who first figured out how to photograph snowflakes? This week the artists will explore positive and negative space using stencels and pastels to create their own unique snowfalke images. Our book this week is "Snowflake Bentley," a story about Wilson Bentley and how he discovered the way to capture beautiful images of snowflakes with his camera. |
